“It’s a Wonderful World”- 2011 Monaghan Mental Health Primary School Project Draws Huge Response
Hundreds of Primary School Pupils Participate in Poetry and Prose

Monaghan Mental Health Association (MMHA) members were delighted with the response to their primary schools essay and poetry competition last week when hundreds of entries flooded in from schools across the county.
Over 200 people, including teachers, parents and school children turned up for the presentation night in the Westenra Hotel, Monaghan last Wednesday night where winners and runners up from each school were presented with their certificates and prizes. Development Officer for Mental Health Ireland, Sean Mc Kiernan was MC in the unavoidable absence of Chairperson Margaret Fleming and welcomed everyone to the event stressing that among the association’s aims was getting out a positive mental health message to all groups and all ages.
The awards on the night were presented by Secretary Emer Brennan, Esther Mc Manus and Maureen Maloney.
After the awards were distributed, volunteers from each school read out their poems or essays to the crowd. Each of the writers/poets did themselves proud as they read their scripts aloud to the audience.
MMHA are very appreciative of the effort put in by all the schools involved in the competition every year, especially the principals and teachers who encouraged their pupils to take part.

It’s a Wonderful World
By Luke Fitzpatrick, St Marys Boys N.S
The world is a wonderful place and it has 196 countries. There are about 7 billion people living in these countries. There is also about 3 million different kinds of animals in the world. The world is about 195 million square miles. About 57 million square miles is land and about 137 million square miles is ocean. It is difficult to say the exact age of the world but Scientists believe it is 454 billion years old. There are 6 continents in the world- they are Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia, America, and Antarctica. But in America they believe there are 7 by America being split into north and south America. There are 4 oceans- they are Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic and the Indian ocean. The largest desert is the Sahara. It is 3.3 million square miles but Antarctica is a polar desert and is 5 million square miles. The most populated country is China with about 1.3 billion people but Russia is the biggest country in the world. But the smallest is Vatican city – it is 0.2 miles and has a population of about 770 people. So from the biggest to the smallest things it really is a wonderful world. |
It’s a Wonderful World!
By Rachel Connolly, Knockconan NS
My world is a wonderful world. It’s happy and fun and there is a lot to do. You can run and about and laugh and shout. People all around us are kind and helpful too. It is a wonderful world for me because all my family is here with me. It’s a wonderful world with all the flowers that have such beautiful colours and smell so nice. There are tulips, snowdrops and daffodils in the spring, in summer there are roses, lilies, daisies and dandelions. In autumn the leaves turn all lovely colours, brown, yellow, orange and gold. In winter the world is very white and sparkly. My world is wonderful because I live in the countryside beside a farm. There are lots of beautiful trees. In summer some of them have lovely flowers. Birds make their nests in trees. Now it is winter and the leaves are falling off, and the birds are flying away to a warmer country but the countryside is still beautiful. My world is a wonderful place because I have got a good healthy Mammy and Daddy and a beautiful sister called Alesha. I have got two grannies and one grandad, four aunties, six uncles and fifteen cousins who are all very healthy too. This makes my world a very happy place!!! :) |
