Monaghan Mental Health “Childhood Worries and Anxieties” Talk
Monaghan Mental Health Association (MMHA) is organising a talk next week featuring Dr. Mary O’ Kane. The talk which will take place on Wednesday 3rd April, 7.30 to 9pm in the Westenra Hotel, Monaghan will offer an explanation of anxiety and practical advice for parents on how to support their children, helping them to manage their fears and gain confidence.
Dr O’ Kane is a Lecturer in Psychology, Early Childhood Studies and Education. She runs a monthly Parenting Slot on Ireland AM discussing a broad range of parenting and childhood issues” Childhood Worries and Anxieties:
MMHA secretary, Emer Brennan explained, “Anxiety in children is an issue that is causing more concern for parents and for schools. We know that all children worry sometimes, as we all do. However for some children it can be a real challenge to manage those worries and anxieties. It can be difficult for parents and indeed teachers to know how to react and how best to support children and young people. Parents play a very important role in helping their child to both understand and to manage their anxiety. Adults dont want to either belittle or amplify worries. In this talk Dr Mary O’Kane will explains anxiety and offer parents practical advice on how to support their children, helping them to manage their fears and gain confidence.”
Speaker Dr Mary O'Kane is a Lecturer in Psychology, Early Childhood Studies and Education whose research interests include childhood transitions; self esteem and wellbeing, and the value of play. She runs a monthly Parenting Slot on Ireland AM discussing a broad range of parenting and childhood issues while also responding to viewers parenting queries. She is also a regular contributor to the Alison Curtis Show on Today FM. She gives public talks on a range of topics related to child wellbeing, parenting, and education.

Monaghan Mental Health Association runs a number of talks each year and organises projects involving positive mental health promotion. One of MMHAs most successful projects has been the Mindfullness in Schools project which has involved a numvber of schools across the north Monaghan area. The group are hoping to re-launch the project for more schools in the coming year.
